Holi celebrates the start of the new Spring season and is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima according to the Hindu calendar. This means the festival of colour falls on a date which is in either February or March, but the date will vary year on year. In 2021, Holi starts on Sunday, March 28 and ends on Monday, March 29.
The date always varies year on year, due to it following the Hindu calendar and not the Gregorian calendar, which most people are familiar with.
What is the festival of Holi and what is its history?
The festival of Holi has many more aspects to it than just playing with water and colour.
The word Holi derives its name from Holika who is the sister of Hiranyakashipu, who was an Asura and king of the daityas from the Puranic scriptures of Hinduism.
The salvation of Prahlada and burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi, meaning Hindus burn bonfires on the eve of Holi to commemorate this event in mythology.
This event is known as Holika Dahan or the burning of Holika also called Chhoti Holi or small Holi, after the fire Holika Dahan prayers are said and God is praised.
In the South of India, Holika Dahan is referred to as Kama Dahanam.
Colours and water are thrown as people of all age groups get together to celebrate the festival which is associated with family, fun and joy.
