How to still get the most for your money, even if prices are rising and product sizes are shrinking
It has been revealed more than 2,500 products, including chocolate and sweets, have suffered from shrinkflation — when they get smaller but their prices stay the same or even go up.
But it doesn’t need to be small or nothing, thanks to my tricks . . .
- Track it: When you do your next big shop, make a note of the sizes and prices of big- label products on your calendar and update each week. This way you will know straight away if you are getting a worse deal and can look for top swaps.
For example, Surf washing powder is £3 at Iceland, but has shrunk from a 25-wash 2kg box to a 23-wash 1.61kg.
Swap to Tesco Non-Bio Laundry Powder, contains 25 washes for £2.50.
SAVING: 50p plus two more washes - What’s in a name: Most of the shrinking products are big-name branded items. Own-brand is not only usually cheaper, but I always notice that you tend to get more quantity.
Toblerone bars have shrunk from 150g to 70g and they cost £1.50 each at Sainsbury’s, but Poundland’s Twin Peaks bars are priced at £1 for a generous 180g.
SAVING: 50p plus you get 30g more - The price is right: Online or in store, retailers should display a cost per item or per gram — and this is an easy way to find the cheapest product and applies to everything, even loo roll.
Andrex now have 200 sheets per loo roll, down from 220, meaning you are getting a lot less than you used to.
Buy a pack of nine at Asda for £4.95 and that’s 55p a roll. But pick up a £3.50 Velvet Comfort nine-pack (210 sheets per roll) and slash the price to 38p.
SAVING: £1.45 and get half a roll more (90 sheets) - Bulk up: Sometimes buying more helps save more. Yes, really. KitKat Chunkys are on the shrinkflation list, having lost 8g in the last four years despite the price rising 25 per cent. But while the now 40g bar is 60p, you can save by buying extra. Packs of four are on offer for 90p at Tesco, making them about 22p a bar. Bought individually, four bars would bee £2.40.
SAVING: £1.50 and get 120g more - PS IT’S Burns Night tonight so check out the deals on this page to help you celebrate.
