I am a single gay man desperate to be a dad and don't know where to start

DEAR DEIDRE: I WANT to be a dad, but I’m a single gay man so it’s not easy.

I am 31 and my dating experience hasn’t been great.

I have had long-term relationships, but my last one ended and it took me a long time to get over him.

I’ve tried dating and have been on more than 100 first dates.

Unfortunately I’ve not found anyone I would want to stay with.

Mr Right is out there, I know it, but why should I wait for him?

My lesbian friend has asked me to be a sperm donor for her and her wife, but I want to be an active father. What can I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: First be sure you really are up for the commitment of parenting.

Babies, children and young people are demanding and need our loving attention pretty much non-stop.

Talk it through with your friend and see what she thinks.

But many people also cope really well as single parents.

Before taking practical steps, read the Guide For Gay Dads at stonewall.org.uk.
