I worry my baby’s father will be abusive again if he finds out I’ve met another man

We were together for three years but as soon as I got pregnant, he started being abusive about me and the baby. He got so nasty that I was afraid and left when I was eight weeks pregnant.

I am 27, he is 26 and the only contact we have now is about the pregnancy.

I won’t stop him being involved and don’t want my baby to miss out on family members.

I feel I deserve to be happy but he makes it difficult. I have met someone else but have kept it quiet because I am afraid of trouble.

I am scared he will start on me again if he finds out I’ve met someone else. He has a girlfriend but is a jealous guy.

DEIDRE SAYS: Contact with an abusive father is not good for a child so don’t feel you must keep him in your life once the baby is born. If you worry your child won’t have much extended family, close friends can be “aunties” and “uncles”.

If your ex does start causing trouble, get advice on how to handle the situation safely from the National Domestic Abuse Helpline (0808 2000 247) or see womensaid.org.uk.
