We’re not saying Kate Middleton has snuck out for a hair appointment this lockdown, but she has been wearing her hair in updos recently so we hadn’t really noticed that her hair has gone warmer and blonder in colour – until now.
The Duchess showed off the look for us over the weekend on the Kensington Royal Instagram page, and we were stunned. While the real reason for the post was to highlight the Hold Still campaign, we couldn’t help but also spot how much lighter her hair has gone.
And not just lighter, but it also seems to feature some “hair contouring” – the technique that just last week Michelle Keegan’s go-to Wella colourist, Calum Tierney, posted about on a now viral Instagram Reels video.
If you missed the news, contouring is the latest and trendiest way of colouring hair, and is inspired by the process of contouring the face with make-up.
Michelle Keegan shows off new ‘contoured’ hair transformation – and this colour trend is set to take off
This is the world's most popular hairstyle – and celebs like Victoria Beckham and Chrissy Teigen love it
It uses a combination of free hand application and highlighting, paired with the careful positioning of different tones and depths around the face to highlight and shadow targeted areas. Darker tones are used to create shadows, and can help shorten or narrow the face shape. Lighter tones are used to elongate and lengthen the face shape by helping to reflect light.
Since Kate has gone lighter around her face, it looks like her colourist could be using some cleverly placed highlights to add more highlights to skin.

We also love how the Duchess is dispelling the age-old myth that you have to go for a lighter colour in summer and a darker colour in winter. In fact, Kate seems to have done it the other way round and has been transitioning her hair from a chocolatey brown into a warm bronde through summer and into autumn.
Until now we haven’t seen the full results of her colour shift, as she was last pictured out on Remembrance Day Sunday, when she wore her hair up in an intricate updo.

Kate’s look last weekend was to present the Hold Still campaign, in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery. It saw people of all ages to submit a photographic portrait, taken in a six-week lockdown period between May and June, and Kate is on the judging panel.
