Mum feels ‘violated’ as mother-in-law pierces baby’s ears behind her back

A woman was fuming when her mother-in-law got her baby’s ears pierced without permission.

She kicked off at her in-law, which led to her husband’s family calling her “disrespectful”.

Not knowing what to do, she asked Reddit: “Am I the a***hole for not seeing mother-in-law after she got my daughter’s ears pierced behind our backs?"

She went on to explain how the argument took place, writing: “My husband’s family and I have had some cultural difference issues in the past.

“I try to stay out of them as best as I can, until they involve my kids (I have a son who is 4 and a daughter who is 3 months old)…

“One tiny thing that came about when I had a daughter, was ear piercing. It’s a big deal in my husband’s culture that the baby girls get their ears pierced pretty much at birth.”

The Redditor continued: “I wasn’t comfortable with it. I know they won’t remember it and wasn’t so much the pain aspect, but more so I wanted her to be able to decide.

“Yes, the holes close up, but I’d rather her get to decide when or if she pierces them, when she’s older.

“I told my mother-in-law this, every time she pestered me (pretty much from the time I was post-labor and she came to visit me in the hospital).

“My husband agreed with me.”

The mum thought the matter was resolved – until she left her baby alone with her mother-in-law.

The post continues: “Last weekend, we went out to run a few errands kid free.

“Mother-in-law kept them out a bit later and when she returned….my daughter had pierced ears.

“She said she had my sister-in-law (husband’s sister) do them. She’s done them for all the babies in the family and it was tradition.

“I was p*ssed. I felt so violated, took my kids and told her to leave.

“My husband was equally as p*ssed and they argued outside, in their native language, for quite a bit, before mother-in-law left.”

Since the argument, the mum has banned her mother-in-law from seeing her kids alone.

Her husband is “on the fence” about the situation but his family members are fuming.

She asked: “Am I being an a*** here?”

The post garnered more than 900 upvotes – and people had very strong opinions about it.

One responder wrote: “That is absolutely NOT OKAY. It’s not like oh she painted your kids nails and that washes off. No she put HOLES in YOUR BABY's ears.”

Another agreed: “Your children not hers. If she can't respect the decisions you and your husband make then she isn't fit to babysit.”

And a third added: “The mother-in-law went behind your back when you explicitly said you don't want your kid's ears pierced which is not ok.

“If she can't be trusted to follow your simple instructions she shouldn't be allowed to watch your children."
