My eldest daughter won’t have anything to do with my premmie twins

DEAR DEIDRE: MY twin daughters were born eight weeks early a year ago. They spent seven weeks in intensive care but eventually they came home.

The problem is my eldest daughter, who is 15, won’t have anything to do with them. I am 38 and I also have an 11-year-old son from my first marriage. The twins are from my second.

She’s always been such a lovely girl, but since their arrival she is completely different. When one twin went back into hospital, she didn’t even ask after her.

She has always been a lovely big sister to her brother so I can’t understand it. It is causing a rift between me and my husband, who is 43. He wants her to live with her dad.

DEIDRE SAYS: It does sound as if your daughter feels resentful and even angry towards the twins for the impact they have had on all your lives.

Also, she was the only girl and now there are three. She may fear she won’t have a special place in your heart any more.

Reassure her that you will always be there for her, but explain whatever she holds against the twins is not their fault. Try to involve her in their care.

She can talk to The Mix –, 0808 808 4994, if she is worried about anything.
