Please Explain podcast: Crown’s Sydney opening blocked over money laundering concerns
The NSW gambling regulator has blocked Crown Resorts from opening its new $2.2 billion Sydney casino next month after a stunning 11th hour admission that criminals probably laundered dirty cash through the group's bank accounts.
In a desperate attempt to salvage the Barangaroo casino, Crown Resorts proposed a "working test" to prove it is fit to operate by opening under close supervision.
Crown's barrister Neil Young, QC, told Commissioner Patricia Bergin that if she finds Crown unsuitable to hold a licence it was not necessary to delay operations during a "conversion period" to clean up its act.
ILGA chairman Philip Crawford said on Wednesday the authority would not allow Crown to open the casino until the Bergin inquiry delivers its report, which is due by February.
In this episode, national editor Tory Maguire and business columnist Elizabeth Knight discuss the Bergin inquiry and the future of Crown Resorts in Sydney.
