Mathias Cormann has been elected the next secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, in a strategic coup for the Australian government.

Cormann emerged victorious – much to the surprise of numerous domestic critics – after a six-month contest pitted him against nine other candidates.
