A New 'Game of Thrones' Teaser Shows Jon, Arya, and Sansa Together
After over a year of promo, HBO finally revealed the premiere date for Game of Thrones Season 8: April 14, 2019. The big reveal took place this evening, right before the Season 3 premiere of True Detective, another one of HBO’s highly-anticipated programs. And, along with the date announcement, the network shared an official teaser for the upcoming episodes—and it shows new footage this time.
The clip shows Jon Snow, Arya Stark, and Sansa Stark in an eerie sequence in the crypts of Winterfell. They pass by the graves of their fallen family members—including Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark, and Lyanna Stark (who’s Jon’s real mother)—before arriving to their own graves at the end of the dark corridor. Does this mean they’ll meet their demise this season?
The scene ends with Jon’s candle blowing out and cold air (usually a sign that White Walkers are near) filtering into the catacomb. Jon and Arya draw their swords. Watch the sneak peek below:
Although the exact premiere date was revealed today, GoT fans knew the show was retuning in April 2019 for a while now. Last January, HBO confirmed that the series would resume in 2019, and Maisie Williams (who plays Arya Stark) revealed in an interview that the premiere would be in April. GoT has also historically premiered in April for all of its previous seasons, except for Season 3, which debuted at the end of March, and Season 7, which arrived in mid-July.
Season 8 will consists of six episodes instead of the usual 10, but they’ll have movie-worthy run times. Deadline reported in 2017 that each episode would last 80 minutes or more, while Variety more recently revealed that they’re rumored to be 90 minutes long. “It’s a spectacle. The guys have done six movies,” HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler, who got an early look at the upcoming season, told Variety.
Now that HBO has revealed GoT‘s return date don’t expect the company to continue spilling details on Season 8. Prior to today’s clip, the limited sneak peeks for the upcoming season barely reveal anything about what’s to come. The first teaser, for example, doesn’t include any new footage, but instead shows fire and ice dramatically spreading—and clashing—over the Dragonstone map of Westeros.
Luckily, some Season 8 visuals appeared in a recent HBO promo, showing Daenerys Targaryen meeting Sansa Stark as she and Jon Snow arrive to Winterfell.
