Avengers: Guess which Marvel star is set to play Captain Hook in live-action Peter Pan?

Marvel have hosted some big Hollywood stars in their Avengers team-ups and solo outings over the years. And now Captain Marvel villain Jude Law looks set to be whisked off to Neverland to play Captain Hook in a Disney live-action remake of Peter Pan. According to Variety, the 47-year-old is in talks to star in a new movie called Peter Pan and Wendy.

The movie is expected to be a theatrical release and not straight to Disney Plus.

Disney’s original animated Peter Pan film was released in 1953 as an adaptation of JM Barrie’s classic novel.

Since then there have been a number of live-action attempts, but none of them have managed to entirely capture the magic of the original.

Most recently Hugh Jackman’s Pan, a prequel to the main story, was a box office flop.

While Steven Spielberg doesn’t look fondly on his Robin Williams-led Hook (which is set years after Peter Pan) despite it becoming something of a cult classic.

Hook saw Dustin Hoffman play the pirate, while the 2003 live-action movie Peter Pan (not produced by Disney) saw Jason Isaacs portray both Captain Hook and George Darling.

Disney’s upcoming remake is hardly surprising considering the billion-dollar success of recent live-action adaptations of its animated classics.

In the last few years, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King have all topped $1 billion.

While the live-action version of The Lady and The Tramp went straight to Disney Plus.

Next up in the cinema is Mulan, which was supposed to release in March, but has been pushed back a couple of times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As it stands the Chinese epic will release on August 21, 2020.

And next year sees a new One Hundred and One Dalmatians live-action movie in Cruella.

Released in May 2021, the prequel sees Emma Stone play a young Cruella de Vil in 1970s London.

Also in the works are a remake of The Little Mermaid from Rob Marshall, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from Marc Webb and Pinocchio helmed by Robert Zemeckis.

While remakes of Bambi, Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lilo and Stitch, The Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood are on the way too.

And if that’s not enough, sequels to the live-action Aladdin and The Jungle Book are on the way after their box office successes.

However, neither sequel is expected to be an adaptation of the animated follow-ups, like Return of Jafar.

Clearly nostalgia for the animated classics is drawing audiences to see the latest Disney remakes.

Some critics find these films too unoriginal when new stories could be focused on.

While fans of them are enjoying modern takes on these much-loved classics.
