Who is in the cast of Black Narcissus?

Sister Clodagh – Gemma Arterton

Sister Clodagh is leading a mission to the palace of Mopu in a remote part of the Himalayas, known as the House of Women.

When Clodagh and fellow nuns arrive, they meet General Toda Rai (played by Kulvinder Ghir) who has donated The House of Women to Clodagh and the nuns of St Faiths in the hope they will be able to rid the palace of unhappy memories connected to his late sister Srimati (Gianni Gonsalves).

Arterton described her character, Sister Clodagh, as “incredibly competitive and in a constant state of feeling her past and battling with who she really is.”

Arterton is best known for her stage and film career, most notably appearing in the films Quantum of Solace, Tamara Drewe, St Trinians and Clash of the Titans.

Mr Dean – Alessandro Nivola

Alessandro Nivola stars as a handsome and damaged land agent, Mr Dean who grabs Sister Clodagh’s attention.

Discussing his character, Nivola said: “He’s one of those guys who is very gruff and almost delights in offending people.

“He’s got a very direct and brutally honest manner. He’s kind of disgusted by the arrogance that the English had in this part of the world and the Catholic mission that is being set up in the palace represents all that is wrong to him.

“He’s predisposed against these women coming in and has already had an experience where a bunch of brothers had previously come in to do the same thing.”

Nivola is an American actor and producer, best known for his role as Pollux Troy in Face/Off and Lee Berger in Chimerica.

Sister Ruth – Aisling Franciosi

Aisling Franciosi portrays the troubled Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus.

To prepare for the role, Franciosi researched nuns and missionary work.

She said: “I read a little bit into the lifestyle that nuns lead. From my point of view, Ruth as a character isn’t devoted to this vocation.

“Ruth strays pretty quickly from that path. She’s very quick to rage and finds it hard to control her emotions.

“There are periods where she just completely withdraws and doesn’t speak very much; flashes of rage and uncontrollable emotions.

“I spoke at length with Charlotte about how we didn’t want her to be a caricature, we wanted to be able to empathise with her.

“I wanted her to feel like a real person and it becomes quite understandable that she ends up where she does.”

Franciosi is an Irish actress, best known for her role as Katie Benedetto in The Fall and Kate Crawford in Legends.

She is also well known for playing Lyanna Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Mother Dorothea – Diana Rigg

Broadbent is an Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actor for his role as John Bayley in Iris.

He is also well known for playing Lord Longford in Longford, Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and Archmaester Ebrose in Game of Thrones.
