Bridgerton season 2 spoilers: Daphne and Simon heartbreak ‘confirmed’ as star drops clue
Bridgerton: Daphne runs out of the ball
Netflix has yet to renew the steamy period drama for a follow-up instalment, but subscribers have already fallen head-over-heels for Simon and Daphne’s whirlwind Regency romance. However, Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page has warned fans not to expect a happy ending just yet.
Regé-Jean Page has hinted at the possibility of more heartbreak for his character Simon Basset and Daphne Bridgerton (played by Phoebe Dynevor).
Their fake courtship blossomed into a scandalous affair in the first season of Netflix’s breakout series, Bridgerton, which premiered on Christmas Day.
Although they admitted their love for each other in the fifth episode of the new series, their relationship was not without its fair share of hardships.
Following some jaw-dropping moments in season one, leading man Page indicated there could be more emotional turmoil to come if Bridgerton returns.

Speaking to TV Guide, he said: “I’m not sure I believe in paradise. I know that the romance genre generally does — part of the deal is that you get a happy ending.”
The romantic pair had to navigate the challenges of Regency London in the first season, including competitive suitors and the watchful eye of gossip columnist Lady Whistledown (voice by Julie Andrews).
After tying the knot in season one, Page seemed sure Simon and Daphne would remain happily married by the end of the series.
However, Bridgerton’s romances and scandals are just as messy and unpredictable as the modern dating scene, so their relationship could face all kinds of challenges next season.
He continued: “But as far as continuing to explore characters, I think that love is an evolving thing.
“It’s a living, breathing thing that needs tending, that needs looking after, that needs mending when it gets worn or torn.
“They get married very young. They still have a lot of growing to do. They have a lot to do, and I think it’ll always be fun to watch them do that together.”
Bridgerton took audiences by surprise with Daphne’s shocking reaction to Simon’s confession that he was unable to have children.

Exposing his aim to prevent her pregnancy after making a spiteful promise to his neglectful father, Daphne forces his hand in the bedroom to ensure he stays put at the critical moment.
Thankfully, the pair reconcile upon the birth of their first child, but the event has nevertheless hung a shadow over the marriage which could be brought to the fold when Bridgerton returns.
The brand new Netflix Original hasn’t been confirmed for a follow-up quite yet, but Simon and Daphne’s romance became an overnight hit over the holiday quite yet.
Speaking on the breakout pair, Page certainly seemed to think the characters had enough staying power to sustain a second season.
He explained: “[Daphne] is incredibly capable. She’s incredibly strong-willed. She’s incredibly intelligent.
“And I think that both Simon and Daphne are very, very attracted to someone who’s capable of both standing up to them and challenging them.”
Fans will have to wait and see what those challenges entail, as another season likely won’t be hitting Netflix until the following Christmas.
Bridgerton season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
