Can Kanye West run for president in 2020? – The Sun
KANYE West tweeted on Saturday that he wanted to run for office but missed the deadline to register as an independent in six states already.
The rapper also doesn't appear to be registered with the Federal Election Committee.
Here is more on Kanye and his run for office.
Can Kanye West run for president?
Yes, he technically can.
However, he may experience roadblocks as it is too late for him to file as an independent in six states.
Certain states like North Carolina, Texas, New York and Maine have deadlines in order to have an independent candidate register for the election.
While Kanye could just be on the ballot as a “write-in”, many of these states do not count those as official votes and the rules vary.
A report done by the Washington Post in 2016 claims that states often opt to tally up the individual votes all write-in candidates receive as one and place them in an "other" category.
Aside from just announcing to run for office, candidates must have an official registration with the Federal Elections Commission, which does not have a deadline.
Kanye does not appear to be registered with the commission, however he can still make the Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and West Virginia independent candidate registration.
A candidate by the name of "KANYE DEEZ NUTS WEST" registered as a presidential candidate as a member of the Green Party in 2015, though has not reported raising any funds.
Is Kanye democrat or republican?
The rapper has not alluded to a specific political party affiliation.
However, he has been known for his backing of President Trump and being photographed with a MAGA hat on numerous occasions.
In 2018, he made a bizarre appearance at the White House and made an expletive-filled rant that Trump described as "quite something."
"I love this guy right here," West said, walking behind the desk to hug the seated president, who said: "That's really nice."
The rapper also pushed back on the idea that African-Americans are overwhelmingly Democratic Party voters, saying: "People expect that if you're black, you have to be Democrat."
He continued: "I'm definitely voting this time. And we know who I'm voting on,
"And I'm not going to be told by the people around me and the people that have their agenda that my career is going to be over."
Who has publicly supported him since his announcement?
His announcement received backlash but celebrities like Elon Musk and NBA Dallas Maverick’s owner Mark Cuban have taken to supporting Kanye’s presidential run.
Elon tweeted back at Kanye saying: “You have my full support!”
Mark made his remarks about Kanye on Twitter stating: "If there was Rank Choice voting available and Kanye West was on the ballot with Joe Biden and Donald Trump, I would have Kanye West ahead of Donald Trump."
Cuban continued: "If you think Biden is a joke compared to Trump you aren't paying attention.
"It's time to step away from all the memes and look at reality.
"The Pandemic Response could not be botched any worse and he refuses to take any responsibility or try to improve it. That's disqualifying."
Kim Kardashian has supported Kanye’s run as well by responding to his tweet with the American flag.
Why did Kim and Kanye go to the White House?
Recently, the couple visited the White House to demand prisoner reform after Kim helped set Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman free.
Alice was given a life sentence for a non-violent drugs conviction in 1996, and became a symbol for many of harsh sentencing in the US.
Trump commuted her life sentence and granted her clemency.
Kim also asked Trump to commute the life sentences of three women who were jailed for drug-related and white collar crimes.
They have been widely criticized for flaunting their riches during COVID-19 times by celebrities like Sharon Osborne, who called them "tone-deaf."
When was Kanye hospitalized for mental illness?
In 2016, Kanye was admitted to Los Angeles's Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for “exhaustion” and “sleep deprivation.”
It was then later shared in an interview with David Letterman that he was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and was held at the psychiatric ward involuntarily.
"They have this moment where they put you, they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed, and they separate you from everyone you know," he said.
Kanye was also candid about the issues he had with his diagnosis.
“You have this moment [where] you feel everyone wants to kill you. You pretty much don't trust anyone," he said.
"When you're in this state, you're hyper-paranoid about everything, everyone,
"This is my experience, other people have different experiences.
Everyone now is an actor. Everything's a conspiracy. You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you're being recorded. You feel all these things," he concluded.
When is the election?
The presidential election is on November 3, 2020.
Trump is the official Republican nominee and Joe Biden is representing the Democratic party.
