Peaky Blinders is currently between seasons as the sixth outing prepares to begin production in early 2021. Cillian Murphy will be returning again as notorious gangster Tommy Shelby in the BBC drama but some fans want to know a bit more about him.

How tall is Cillian Murphy?

Murphy’s performance at the psychologically damaged and brutal leader of the Peaky Blinders has won him much acclaim over the years.

He has starred in the role since 2013 when Tommy was a fresh-faced gangster who had just returned from war.

Now fans of the show will know he is an MP who is climbing the ranks of power and influence in the series.

Season six will be no different as the series heads into the 1930s and towards the start of World War Two.

Fans of the series love to find out more about the stars behind the show, including how they get into character.

As a result, some have also been curious about how tall Murphy is, given his character’s intimidating demeanour.

Actor Murphy is 5ft 7in tall, which is equivalent to 170cm.

This is shorter than some of Tommy’s biggest opponents, including Sam Neill’s Inspector Campbell who is 6’ 0” and Sam Claflin’s Oswald Mosley who is 5’ 11”.

However, the star has previously spoken about how he transforms his body in the role to make himself seem bigger.

Speaking to Vulture back in 2019, he explained: “I’m not the most imposing of individuals in my own life.

“So I go to the gym and lift things and put them down again.

“I dropped the level of Tommy’s voice. Then there’s the cigarettes, of course.

“I remember seeing The Long Goodbye with Elliott Gould, and he just constantly has his cigarettes, and even though he’s got this façade of cool, you clearly see that the cigarette is indicating some deeper level of stress.

“I tried to steal it for Tommy, I suppose. And the hair, of course, played a part in all this.”

Series creator Steven Knight has also previously spoken about how when he first met Murphy he was not what he envisioned for the character.

However, he was completely won over by how the star transformed himself for the role.

Speaking to the Obsessed With Peaky Blinders podcast, he said: “I’d nearly cast Cillian for a film that I’d made and ended up casting Jason Statham.

“There’s a huge difference as you can see. But when this role first came up, Cillian came and he’s not a big man.

“He’s quite slight and when he walks in as Cillian, he doesn’t look like a gangster from Birmingham.

“We did the meeting and afterwards he sent a text saying, ‘Remember I’m an actor,’ which is so true.

“And obviously when you see him when he walks onto the set, there now could not possibly, conceivably be anyone but him as Tommy Shelby.”

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix now.
