Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy makes another call for Curly Watts to return

While a lot of Coronation Street‘s bigger storylines feature its younger characters, the soap always makes room for the beloved older residents of the cobbles.

One Corrie veteran who isn’t part of the show right now is Curly Watts, also known as actor Kevin Kennedy, who told the Daily Star that he’d love to make a return (and not for the first time).

“I’m very proud of my history with Coronation Street,” he said. I still think it’s the best thing I’ve done. I enjoy it when people remember my time there.

“I would like to go back. I think Curly was a very interesting character… he was multi-faceted.

“There have been mutterings about me going back. So we’ll have to wait and see what happens. I think the fans always enjoy it when a character returns, it’s something they are familiar with.

“I have very good relations with both ITV and Coronation Street. Ultimately it’s down to them.”

Kennedy starred as Curly Watts on the soap for 20 years, between 1983 and 2003, and many of his storylines included a light-hearted look at his bad luck in love.

Speaking about some of the darker storylines that soap is tackling at the moment, he said: “I think Kate [Oates] has been very brave and she’s realised the show has to appeal to a wider audience.

“The subjects aren’t easy to do. But they’ve been handled really well and in a Coronation Street way.

“I always trusted the Coronation Street writers because they rarely missed the mark.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
