Coronation Street's Beverley Callard's scrapped exit as Liz McDonald revealed as she got wrapped up with robber Scott

BEVERLEY Callard's scrapped Coronation Street exit would have seen Liz McDonald flee the cobbles a wanted fugitive, The Sun Online can exclusively reveal.

The barmaid – who was played by I'm A Celebrity star Beverley Callard – was due to have the explosive exit earlier this year when she was due to bow out of the soap after 30 years.

However the pandemic meant she was unable to film her final exit – and Beverley then sadly suffered a botched hip operation putting her out of action when filming resumed.

So bosses were forced to rewrite her dramatic exit that would see her team up with armed robber Scott Emberton to raise money for grandson Oliver's treatment and legal battle.

A source revealed: "Liz was originally going to team up with Scott and take the money for Oliver.

"It would have been hugely dramatic and emotional as Liz said farewell to her home of three decades.

"Instead elements of the story were kept with her granddaughter Emma Brooker receiving some of the money instead before confessing to police.

"She was let off with a fine – but the consequences would have been more serious for Liz and she would have had to say goodbye to her friends and family for good."

Liz's exit wasn't shown on-screen. Instead there was a passing reference to her having moved to Spain by son Steve.

Corrie bosses are hopeful to bring Liz back next year for a proper send-off befitting of Beverley's legendary soap status.

And they have been clear that Liz will not be killed off, and they remain hopeful that Beverley will one day want to return to the soap full-time.

On-screen Liz’s grandson Oliver’s heartbreaking illness will come to an end next week when his parents Leanne and Steve agree to turn off his life support.

The emotional scenes are set to carry the soap into its 60th anniversary week.
