Dean Gaffney says he’s piling on pounds after Costa coffee opens on ‘Enders set

What’s that? Tiffany’s back? No, I said put that chocolate tiffin back…

There’s no trouble brewing in Albert Square after bosses opened a branch of Costa on set.

And that is bad news for some of EastEnders’ heavyweight stars, who are piling on the pounds.

Soap veteran Dean Gaffney revealed he has been blowing his salary on the coffee chain’s lattes and cakes, admitting: “It’s not good for my bank balance or my belly… but it’s nice to go there.”

But Dean, who plays roadsweeper Robbie Jackson, is keeping his diet balanced – he has also taken to scoffing black grapes to help him brush up his lines.

The 40-year-old actor, who began on the BBC soap 27 years ago, said: “I will try things. I started as someone said black grapes are good for your brain. It’s a muscle and you need to keep it working.

“I now eat black grapes every other week just to train the brain. I think it works – I’m learning my lines and not mucking up.”

Dean, who dreamed of joining MI5, also spoke of his heartache over former co-star Barbara Windsor’s fight with Alzheimer’s. He said: “She’s a legend. It’s not nice.”
