Channel 4’s The Bridge kicks off tonight and it looks nothing short of dramatic if our exclusive first look is anything to go by.

The brand new reality show, narrated by James McAvoy, will follow 12 strangers come together in the British countryside tasked with building a bridge in just 20 days in a bid to win £100,000.

The prize is out of reach on an island 250 metres away from where the contestants are based, and they’ll have to cross a body of water to get to it.

That’s not all though. If the hopefuls are successful, they’ll then have to vote for who deserves the prize the most.

During their time building the bridge, the only information the group will receive will be in the form of flares.

In a clip shared exclusively with Metro.co.uk, tense scenes show the moment the camp saw the very first flare go off.

The message is fired from the tower and then the signals are delivered in a locked box.

Explaining the rules, McAvoy says: ‘They only have 15 minutes to retrieve it before the message expires.

‘The first flare will reveal how the will win the money.’

As the flair fired off, the group jumped to their feet and scrambled to locate where it had landed.

Two of the boys stripped off their clothes and jumped into the water to swim to the box, while another lad clambered aboard a canoe to reach it that way.

After finding the box, it was brought onto the canoe and sailed back to shore.

But did the contestants manage to retrieve it in time? Only time will tell…

The Bridge begins tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
