Dennis 'Dirty Den' Watts made an infamous return to EastEnders on this day 18 years ago.

The legendary character was portrayed by Leslie Grantham on the BBC One soap and was seemingly killed off in 1989 when he fell into a river.

Den's body was identified by his adoptive daughter Sharon, with Den also fathering Vicki Fowler (Scarlett Alice Johnson) and Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman).

In 2003, and in one of the most iconic moments in the show's history, he returned.

Repeating his signature phrase "hello Princess", Den stepped out from the shadows of a nightclub and appeared before his daughters, Sharon and Vicki.

Confirming he had survived his river plunge, Den revealed he went into hiding before his reappearance in Walford more than a decade later.

Den was later murdered and killed off for good.

The controversial character died during the show's 20th anniversary in 2005 at the hands of his wife Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), who hit him over the head.

His legacy lives on in the two of his three children who are still alive, Sharon and Vicki.

Sharon (Letitia Dean)

Sharon Watts was adopted by Den and his first wife, Angie Watts.

Portrayed by Letitia Dean, Sharon joined EastEnders in 1985 and served 10 years on the BBC One soap before her initial departure in 1995.

She returned to Albert Square in 2001, famously marrying her adoptive brother Dennis, and departed once again in 2006.

In 2012, Sharon made her third and final comeback to the Walford, where she has resided ever since.

The character has been involved in a number of big storylines since her most recent return, including another marriage to her former husband Grant Mitchell's brother, Phil (Steve McFadden).

Her teenage son Denny Rickman, named after her deceased husband, was killed in a boat accident in February last year.

Sharon also recently gave birth to her son Kayden, who was fathered by her lover Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

Off-screen, Letitia married Jason Pethers in 2002, but the pair later split in 2008.

Jason is best known for portraying Rob Greening in Holby City, with the pair's marriage coming to an end during her time on Strictly Come Dancing.

Letitia has also reportedly amassed a fortune from her lengthy time on EastEnders, with Celebrity Net Worth putting the stars fortune at an estimated £6.5 million.

Vicki Fowler (Scarlett Alice Johnson)

Vicki Fowler was Dirty Den's shock lovechild, whom he fathered after a secret romp with Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully).

Portrayed by two child actors, Vicki had a troubled start to life and survived both a vicious bout of meningitis and a kidnapping during her childhood.

The youngster eventually learned the truth of her parentage after overhearing a conversation between Sharon and her first husband Grant.

She and her mother Michelle both departed Albert Square in 1995 for a fresh start in Alabama.

In 2003, Vicki made a shock return to Walford and was portrayed by actress Scarlett Alice Johnson.

She moved in with Sharon and also contacted her half-brother Dennis, who she convinced to move nearby.

Vicki later fell pregnant after sleeping with Spencer Moon (Christopher Parker) and left Walford in 2004 after overhearing her father Den say that he "doesn't love her as much as Sharon".

EastEnders viewers were later informed that she and Spencer Moon had opened a bar together in Australia.

After portraying Vicki, Scarlett appeared as Lexi in Adulthood in 2008.

She also appeared in E4 TV series Beaver Falls, and looks totally different now as she appeared in a snap which showed her with long blonde hair, ditching her dark crop.

Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman)

Dennis Rickman was the last of Dirty Den's children to rock up to Walford.

He was portrayed by Nigel Harman, with the youngster joining EastEnders in 2003 in an appearance at his late mother Paula Rickman's funeral while on day release from prison.

The character went on to make a dramatic entrance as a recurring character when he floored Phil Mitchell in a single punch.

He would later strike up a romance with his adoptive sister Sharon, of which his father disapproved.

The pair split up and Dennis began dating Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), who duped Dennis into believing she was pregnant in order to stay together.

Michelle then began an affair with his father Den in a bid to fall pregnant, with Dennis later discovering the pair in bed together.

Dennis and Sharon later wed but their bliss was short-lived.

After confirming her pregnancy to Dennis, he was stabbed to death by an assailant later uncovered as Danny Moon (Jake Maskell).

Since EastEnders, Nigel has had a successful acting career and has gone onto roles in Mount Pleasant and Downton Abbey.

He is married to actress Lucy Liemann, who starred in big films The Bourne Ultimatum, Are You Ready For Love? and The Child In Time.
