EastEnders slips in newly-recorded scene referencing the royal baby's birth
EastEnders slipped in one of their trademark timely scenes on Tuesday night (April 24) to celebrate the royal baby’s arrival.
Kensington Palace confirmed on Monday (April 23) that the Duchess of Cambridge had given birth to a healthy and happy baby boy at St Mary’s Hospital in London, and assured the public that Catherine is “doing well”.
Never one to miss latching onto some timely publicity, EastEnders chucked a newly-recorded section about the baby into Tuesday’s episode. In the humorous scene, the Carter family gathered in the Vic to gossip about the little one’s arrival.
Self-professed royal super-fan Linda (Kellie Bright) beamed: “8lb and 7oz. I mean, that is a very healthy weight isn’t it? If he’s got his daddy’s smile and his mummy’s hair, he’s going to be perfect.
“Makes me want to cry. Diana, a grandma again. All that joy she’s missing out on!”
Her mother-in-law Shirley wasn’t quite as interested, grumbling: “Linda, why are you even talking to me about it? I don’t care.”
With Linda showing absolutely no signs of curbing her enthusiasm, Shirley eventually called in Mick (Danny Dyer) so someone else was on the receiving end of Linda’s royal rant.
These timely scenes are always fun for viewers:
The BBC One soap addressing the news of the day is nothing new. Last year, the results of the 2017 Grand National played into Martin Fowler (James Bye) winning a cool £200 on a smart bet.
And who can when Mick (Danny Dyer), Linda (Kellie Bright) and Johnny (Ted Reilly) Carter bantered about the Brexit vote, or Kathy and Jane Beale’s confusing debate about last year’s election.
EastEnders continues on Thursday (April 26) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
