EastEnders star Jake Wood reveals new boxing role after soap exit

EastEnders legend Jake Wood is finding more time to indulge in his passion for boxing after his exit from the soap.

The actor is currently in the midst of a heavy storyline in the run up to Christmas in Walford as Max Branning tries to whisk Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) away from Mick (Danny Dyer) – all while being suspected of trying to kill long term enemy Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).

While that can’t end well for Max, Jake is having more luck than his alter ego.

As well as the continued success of his now titan Pound for Pound Podcast which centres on boxing, he has now hosted his first pre-fight conference ahead of a bout between Sam Eggington and Ashley Theophane.

It’s a gig that was made for Jake, whose passion for the sport shines through in the video that you can watch above.

Metro.co.uk’s sports team will no doubt be trying to poach him next!

The fight airs this Friday December 11 on Channel 5 at 10pm, which signals a big career change for Jake, who has been with the BBC One soap for years.

Addressing his exit from the role of Max, he said at the time: ‘After 15 years I will be leaving Eastenders at the end of this year.

‘I have loved playing Max Branning who amongst other things in that time has had 4 marriages, 10 affairs, 4 children (2 dying from falling from the roof of The Queen Vic), been buried alive, watched unwanted DVDs at Xmas and perhaps most traumatising of all…shared a hot tub with Ian Beale.

‘I have made some truly great friends whilst on the show and I’ll miss everyone there. I’m grateful they have left the door open for Max and I’m excited to see what new horizons are around the corner.

‘Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages this week, I appreciate the love and support.’
