EastEnders teases aftermath of Dennis death with ‘severe consequences’ to follow
This week marked the 35th anniversary of EastEnders.
And the show's bosses made sure that the impressive milestone was marked in the true dramatic emotional rollercoaster style fans of the BBC soap have become accustomed to.
A boat party attended by most of Albert Square's residents ended tragically with one death in teenager Dennis Rickman.
Queen Vic landlords Mick and Linda Carter narrowly escaped death themselves after a drunken Linda's foot got trapped in a drawer in a downstairs room on the boat and Mick is unable to free her, as the water rises higher and higher.
Elsewhere Bex Fowler was in critical condition in hospital, having collapsed on deck after taking some dodgy pills.
Away from the boat, Sharon Mitchell unexpectedly went into labour and gave birth in more dramatic scenes, as Callum Highway lay badly injured in a warehouse somewhere, with no one to come to his rescue, after being kidnapped, beaten and abandoned by Keanu Taylor.
And if that wasn't enough, Whitney Dean handed herself into the police after killing her stalker Leo King, just before she herself stepped out to the boat party, leaving the body on the kitchen floor for Sonia to discover, upon the advice of Mick Carter, who initially planned to take the rap for her.
But the real drama is only just getting started, as EastEnders boss Kate Oates has confirmed, as fans will see the gripping aftermath of these events spill out over the coming months.
"Much changed, for some, because obviously the consequences are going to be so severe," reveals Kate.
Adding: "The whole point of disaster at this magnitude is that it has a huge impact.
"If you can imagine a community, it has long-standing consequences anyway, people will remember it for a long time to come."
One of the biggest impacts felt will no doubt be the death of Dennis Rickman.
How will this play out for his mother Sharon, who as Dennis was taking his final breaths was giving birth to her newborn son?
Her oldest and dearest friend Ian Beale played a key part in Dennis's death, and some might argue he killed him, which fans debated over on Twitter after the episode aired.
So Ian basically killed his best friends son. Let's see him worm his way out of that one.
One viewer tweeted: "Oh god….poor @AdamWoodyatt is gonna having an interesting 9 months now. Ian has to cope with the guilt of locking his best friend's son in a room, losing the keys, breaking Denny out when it filled with water….. Did Ian murder him though? That's the question."
Viewers will still have to wait to see if Ian confess all to Sharon, or if she finds out some other way, like from the voicemail Dennis left her while trapped.
And, knowing his already fragile state, after the death of his own daughter Lucy and his son Bobby currently fighting for his life after being attack by Islamophobic thugs, how will Ian cope knowing what he did?
As one fan posted in a tweet: "… the repercussions for Ian will be interesting having lost a child himself to being the cause of his oldest friends son's death."
Elsewhere, other questions viewers will be anxious to find out are – will Bex Fowler survive and Will Callum be found before it's too late?
And what about Phil and Ben, what will their relationship be like following this week's events?
Phil was shown shedding a tear for Dennis in last night's episode, will his adoptive son's death reunite him with estranged wife Sharon?
There are also even more questions to be asked about the storylines involving Whitney and the Carters as well, and also how other member of Albert Square will feature in the storylines.
New arrivals in the form of Peter Beale and Bianca Jackson, who, it has just been announced will be returning, are sure to add more interesting angles to the mix.
As boss Kate explains: "The beauty of having all the different clans on different days, the narratives drive on for months and months.
"In some cases, there will be big consequences of the story a year to come. We've got great forward vision as to where we're going to take these stories."
Whatever the next few months and year has in store in EastEnders, viewers can't get enough right now.
Fans posted in their droves on Twitter, to express their glee at what the 35th year anniversary week's episodes had to offer.
One posted: "EastEnders was a masterpiece this whole week. Tonight was the icing on the cake"
Another said: "On the edge of my seat for the whole episode. Absolutely brilliant. congratulations you have surpassed yourselves by far. Loved every minute of #Eastenders35"
