Emmerdale’s Mandy Dingle is no stranger to emotional meltdowns, and now actress Lisa Riley has revealed how she gets herself into character to film those emotional scenes.

Speaking about the soap’s big disaster wedding week – in which Mandy will no doubt end up crying – Lisa explained she just has to think of her late mum Cath and the tears will flow.

The 44 year old star explained: “If I visualise a yellow flower, I know I’ve got a very special angel upstairs in my mum, and every day I go to work I want to make her a little bit more proud.”

Holding back tears as she spoke of Cath, who passed away from Cancer in July 2012, Lisa continued: “I love what I do and I always want to come home and know that I’ve done myself proud firstly, and then my mum.”

The actress, who returned to the Dales as Mandy almost two years ago, also explained why it’s important for her to draw on personal experience when filming particularly emotional scenes.

Lisa continued: “When you’re given stories like this you have to daily tick boxes in emotions that in regular life people don’t have in two years.”

“Sometimes Mandy can have so many emotions in two days and I like to do it naturally, I like to find it and I want to feel it. That’s my job as an actor.”

Lisa’s co-star Bradley Johnson, who plays Vinny, also praised his on screen mum for her raw portrayal of Mandy, saying it breaks his heart to see her upset and helps him get in to character.

Bradley explained: “We’ll have days where it’s just two-handers, and Lisa’s constantly crying.”

“The way I deal with it, me getting emotional, when I see Lisa crying her eyes out and we’re doing a scene, I just get into it because of her.”

He further complimented her, saying: “She’s unbelievable, she really really is. Five or six scenes of crying and she just does it, she just does it like that so easy.”

This comes after Lisa penned a heartfelt tribute to her mum on the anniversary of her death last year.

Taking to her Instagram account, the Strictly Come Dancing star posted a photo of the two of them together, before reflecting on their close relationship and unbreakable bond.

She wrote movingly alongside a family snap: “My mum Cath was everyone’s reason to be happy, bringing joy and happiness to each and every person she met.”

Lisa added: “Unique, different, special, fun, kind, empathetic, one of a kind. The list could go on and on, her glow in these pictures speak volumes of her LOVE….my forever, always angel. KEEP SHINING FROM HEAVEN.”
