Empire season 6: Release date, cast and everything you need to know
Note: Contains spoilers for all five seasons of Empire.
If there’s one TV show that knows how to bring the drama, it’s Empire. The hit Fox series, which follows hip-hop and entertainment company Empire Entertainment and the theatrics surrounding it, debuted in 2015 and has never looked back.
The show’s fourth season, which wrapped up in May this year, was the most explosive to date. We said goodbye to Anika (Grace Gealey) who fell to her death after being drugged by Andre, and Tory (Rumer Willis) also died following complications from a drug overdose.
But those weren’t the only big moments.
Cookie and Lucious tied the knot, Jamal jumped on a plane to London, Blake’s white nationalist father open fired on his son, Hakeem, and a pregnant Tiana, and the Lyons lost Empire to Eddie – deep breaths, everyone.
Season five has only just landed in the US, premiering on September 26, and two years have passed since the events of the finale. As you would expect, Cookie and Lucious are more determined than ever to regain control of the family business, and have run their finances into the ground in the process.
Jamal also returns and we meet his new boyfriend, Kai, and Andre is due for release after serving time in a maximum-security prison on reckless endangerment charges.
We also find out that Blake, Hakeem and Tiana are all still alive after Blake managed to turn the gun on his own father during the shooting.
But will the Lyons manage to take back what is rightfully theirs, and how will they cope with significantly less wealth than they had before?
It’s safe to say it’s been an eventful few years, but will Fox decide to wrap up the series for good at the end of this chapter?
Here’s everything we know about season six so far.
Empire season 6 cast: who’s coming back?
It’s far too early to know even what season five has in store, but the people behind the show recently released a video that teases the death of a significant character – there’s a shot of a coffin and Lucious can be seen standing over it saying “I’m sorry.”
So, if we are getting a sixth season, someone is going to be missing.
As it stands, the main cast is as follows: Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon, Taraji P Henson as Cookie Lyon, Bryshere Y Gray as Hakeem Lyon, Jussie Smollett as Jamal Lyon, Trai Byers as Andre Lyon, Gabourey Sidibe as Becky Williams, Ta’Rhonda Jones as Porsha Taylor, Serayah as Tiana Brown, Nicole Ari Parker as Giselle Barker, Andre Royo as Thirsty Rawlings, Chet Hanks as Blake, Rhyon Nicole Brown as Maya and A.Z. Kelsey as Jeff Kingsley.
But that, as we now know, is subject to change.
Then there’s the recurring cast members, who could all potentially play a part: Toby Onwumere as Kai, Katlynn Simone as Treasure, Mario as Devon, Tasha Smith as Carol Holloway, Phylicia Rashad as Diana DuBois, Sierra McClain as Nessa Parker, Vivica A Fox as Candace Holloway and Joss Stone as Wynter.
But as for Anika and Tory, don’t expect any returns. They are officially dead and buried.
Empire season 6 episodes: how many can we expect?
All five seasons of Empire have had 18 episodes each, so if a sixth season is given the thumbs up, we wouldn’t expect any shake-ups in that department.
Empire season 6 air date: when’s it coming back?
Fox hasn’t yet confirmed whether the series will be returning for a sixth season.
Despite recent ratings suffering a 21% decline compared to the previous year, it still ranks as Fox’s second-highest-rated drama after Ryan Murphy’s 9-1-1 – an impressive effort.
So while we have no official guarantees of a return, things are looking positive.
