Fantastic Beasts 2 star hints at Newt Scamander love story in Crimes of Grindelwald sequel

It’s not too long now before Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits cinemas, and one thing Potterheads are looking forward to learning about is the connection between Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Leta Estrange (Zoe Kravitz).

We know from the first Fantastic Beasts that, during his time in Hogwarts, Newt became close to Leta, with theories suggesting that she may be the reason for his expulsion from the wizarding school.

But speaking in Entertainment Weekly‘s Comic-Con issue, Kravitz has now revealed some more information regarding the characters’ link.

“[Newt and Leta are] friends from childhood when they went to Hogwarts,” she said. “They have quite a special bond and she was always looked at as an outcast, just as Newt was. Now he’s come back into town and learns she’s become engaged to his brother, Theseus, so that’s an awkward situation.”

Asked if the two of them were ever romantically involved, Kravitz responded: “I don’t think it ever went to that place. But Newt has so few friends and connections in his childhood, maybe in his mind it might have gone there? I don’t think it was ever acted upon. But it still feels like a betrayal.”

Earlier this month, Eddie Redmayne hinted that Newt and Leta’s relationship is to come back in a big way, telling Entertainment Weekly: “Leta, it’s one of those relationships where there was definitely great love there. But was it ever a full-blown relationship? I don’t know.”

The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in UK and US cinemas on November 16, 2018.
