Gary Lineker signs up for his first ever acting job on Apple TV series Ted Lasso

AFTER flogging Walkers crisps on the telly for 26 years, Gary Lineker has signed up for a brand new role on the box, I can exclusively reveal.

The Match Of The Day host has joined Apple TV’s award-winning Ted Lasso — a sitcom about a US football coach who is hired to train fictional Premier League footie team AFC Richmond.

And he has already shot scenes in south east London with his Match of The Day co-host and fellow former striker Ian Wright.

A source said: “When Gary was approached to be a part of the show he absolutely jumped at the chance.

“Filming took place on Tuesday at One Night Records in Southwark. When it comes to TV, Gary is an old hand so he didn’t need much guidance on the day. Everyone working on the show told him he was a complete natural.

“Gary will feature in the next series of the show during a scene where Ted’s assistant Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, is imagining he is out for a night on the tiles in the capital.

“In his dream sequence Gary is in the nightclub, waving and being really friendly with him. Those working on the show were so excited when Gary agreed to appear. He is a huge part of the beautiful game and to have him on board added a really funny twist to the scene.”

It’s not the first time Gary has played himself. In 1994 he had a cameo in TV drama An Evening With Gary Lineker, about a couple on holiday in Majorca during the 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and Germany.

Ted Lasso was an awards season hit this year when it scooped three Critics’ Choice gongs and a Best Actor Golden Globe for its leading star Jason Sudeikis.

Jason has spent the past few months in London filming the show, while his ex-missus Olivia Wilde has also been in the capital with her new squeeze Harry Styles. At least Jason could have a new friend in Gary if he needs someone to show him around town.

Kylie: an icon

AFTER Kylie Minogue sang Olly Alexander's praises over their Starstruck duet, he has repaid the favour.

The Years & Years singer said: “Kylie is an icon who has inspired me since I first started making music.

"She’s brought so much to the song. Her voice is divine. I’m over the moon, the stars and the planets that this has happened.”

He’s chuffed then.

DAZZLING Maya Jama gets her boots on for a meeting about the Euro 2021 football tournament.

She waved as she left the BBC in central London yesterday after the discussions about presenting next month’s Euros alongside Peter Crouch and Alex Horne.

Maya teamed a white shirt dress with a pair of thigh-high boots.

And while her career is flying high, so is her love life.

She went public with American basketball player Ben Simmons last weekend, with him referring to Maya as “my girl”.

Ben has netted a good woman in Maya.

Ringo’s flower tip for Oasis

NOEL Gallagher has opened up about the moment he met Beatles legend Ringo Starr for the first time.

But while the former Oasis rocker might have been expecting a chat about their musical successes, it seems Ringo was only interested in one thing.

Noel said: “He was the only man to ever walk into an Oasis dressing room and get a standing ovation. We said, ‘What are you doing in London?’.

“And he said, ‘I’ve come to the Chelsea Flower Show’.”

Baffled Noel believed Ringo was pulling his leg but admitted the drummer revealed that he was obsessed with the annual event and tried to go every year.

Noel added: “He’s going, ‘Do you ever go to the Chelsea Flower Show? You should go and just see the flowers’.”

You won’t be surprised to find out Noel never did follow up on Ringo’s recommendation.

But let’s be honest, Noel’s already come up smelling of roses – he doesn’t need any flower power.

Earth in lonely place

LEGENDARY crooner Mick Hucknall has released a brand new song with Simply Red – called Earth In A Lonely Space.

It is the group’s first since their acclaimed 2019 album Blue Eyed Soul. Of the track, Mick said: “The earth is in a lonely place. It’s the job of any artist to try and capture the moment.”

Simply Red’s postponed UK and Ireland tour kicks off in February.

BBC should Knowles better

HE’S raised millions for charity and has put a smile on the faces of housewives up and down the UK in his role as the host of DIY SOS.

Let’s face it: Nick Knowles is a bit of a national treasure really. He’s the man your mum wants your dad to be more like and the bloke you’d share a pint or three with on a Sunday afternoon.

So when The Sun revealed he was on the verge of being axed from the BBC in a row over a Shreddies advert this week, there was public outcry.

And I, like so many of our readers who got in touch about Nick’s predicament, am still stunned that something as daft as a 30-second cereal ad could see the presenter forced to throw away a 22-year BBC career.

Nick has done more good for the Beeb in his two decades on the box than most of their stiffs in suits have ever done. And let’s be honest, given the battering Auntie is taking right now I think they need good guys like Nick more than ever before.

His team held crunch talks with the BBC this week and it is likely a decision will be made on his future after the weekend. I just hope bosses see sense. There is enough cancel culture around as it is, let alone when those you work for threaten to kick you to the kerb for one paltry mistake.

LITTLE MIX stars Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock say they burst into tears after learning they were both pregnant.

Recalling the moment she discovered Leigh-Anne was expecting, Perrie, who will welcome her first with Liverpool footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, said: “We were on a work Zoom and we were chatting about things that were coming up in our schedule because in Little Mix we are blocked out two years in advance.

I was thinking, ‘I won’t be able to do that’. I messaged my manager and she called me and said, ‘You’re pregnant’. I was like, ‘How do you know? And she said, ‘Because I am pregnant’. Then she said, ‘Can I add someone to the call?’.

“I just heard this voice that said, ‘Perrie! You too!’ And then we just cried our eyes out. What timing! It wasn’t planned.”

In an interview for TikTok with their bandmate Jade Thirlwall, the pair also spoke about their odd pregnancy cravings.

Leigh-Anne, who is expecting her baby with Watford footballer Andre Gray, said: “Prawn sandwiches but the M&S kind, and Frazzles.”

Perrie added: “Mine is Toxic Waste, you know, the barrel. Brain Lickers, Juicy Drop Pops – anything sour. That was when I was feeling really sick but I feel fine now.”

Meanwhile the trio’s former bandmate Jesy Nelson told yesterday how she had signed a deal with Polydor and told fans to expect her debut solo record later this year.

She added: “I cannot wait for you to hear what I’ve been working on.”
