Great British Bake Off 2019: Who left Bake Off tonight?

In this week’s episode of The Great British Bake Off another contestant was voted out of the competition. The latest outing on Tuesday, September 17, saw the team take on dairy week for the first time as some thrived and others struggled. Here’s everything fans need to know about who was booted off the popular baking show this week.

Who left Bake Off tonight?

For the first time this week, the bakers faced the challenge of dairy in the hit baking show.

During the episode, the contestants had to tackle different bakes using different variations of dairy.

This included everything from Indian sweets to Tudor-inspired pastries.

However, no one was safe and at the end of the episode, one baker was eliminated from the competition.

This week, the unlucky contestant was Phil, who struggled with his bakes.

Phil was in the bottom three with Priya and Michael, as both also had a bad weekend in the GBBO tent.

Dairy week curse the dairy week, still, I had a good run

Phil Thorne, Bake Off contestant

As Phil left, he said: “Dairy week curse the dairy week, still, I had a good run!”

This leaves just nine bakers left in the competition ready to keep battling it out.

At the other end of the spectrum, Steph was awarded star baker in the episode.

What happened in Bake Off this week?

1. Signature

This week’s episode of Bake Off required the contestants to use cultured dairy in their first bake.

However, the contestant who struggled most in the challenge was last week’s star baker Michael.

Things all started to go wrong from him after he cracked his cake – but he managed to pull it back when he was saved by it tasting delicious according to the judges.

Phil also struggled a bit in the challenge as his bake did not have much of a taste of rose in it.

2. Technical

This week’s technical challenge was set by Prue Leith who gave the bakers a historical challenge.

She challenged the bakers to bake 12 Tudor-inspired maids of honour with rough puff pastry and lemon curd.

All of the bakers struggled with the curdled cheese, which led Paul to almost storm off set after announcing “they’re awful, they’re really bad”.

Priya came last in the challenge after she didn’t finish her bakes but some others did not do very well either, including Helena and Alice.

Overall, it was Steph who won the tough challenge set by Prue, setting her up for star baker

3. Showstopper

For the showstopper, the bakers were challenged to create Indian sweets called Mishti.

This involved them using condensed milk called khoya, which many in the tent struggled to do.

Henry had the biggest issue when his Mishti did not set in the last few moments of his bake.

Michael managed to redeem himself in the showstopper, as did Priya, making the decision very difficult for the judges.

However, Phil struggled to get the flavours right, leaving him in trouble and ultimately meaning he left the baking show.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 9pm.
