I can't tell you how much benefits saved my life, we could not have got by without,' says Stacey Solomon

STACEY Solomon revealed working tax credits saved her life when she was a young single mum.

Long before she found fame on the X Factor, a teenage Stacey was short of cash and struggling to raise eldest son Zachary.

On yesterday's Loose Women she discussed the cost of living crisis and the overhaul of the benefits system as it transitions to the universal credit model.

Stacey said: "When I had Zachary at 17, 18, I got a Sure Start Grant, it was called at the time, and I can't tell you how much that saved my life.

"My working tax credits saved our life, we could not have got by without those. The milk tokens that we used to get to help us buy SMA and milk and stuff from the shops that we couldn't afford.

"All of that got abolished. Like some of my friends who are in similar circumstances now don't even have those opportunities, they're completely taken away from people and then they turn around and go, 'oh look, we're in a cost of living crisis, let's roll out £400'. It's too little too late.

"I don't think they realise for most people who need that £400, that money was spent six months ago."

This autumn every household in the UK will see £400 slashed off their energy bill, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has confirmed.

The reduction is part of £10billion package of help to get families through the cost of living crisis.

Households were set to be given a £200 refund on their bills in October – but the idea was widely slated because it was a loan that everyone would have to repay.

Now the help has been doubled to £400 – and households will not have to give the money back.
