Is Peter leaving Coronation Street and does he die?

Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) has had a tough time in Coronation Street this week, after being brutally attacked by a thug in a horrific showdown on Monday night.

The character clashed with Carla Connor (Alison King) in a heated argument during Monday night’s double bill of episodes.

Peter had a tough day in tonight’s double-bill of the ITV soap, after he clashed with Carla Connor (Alison King) in a heated argument, leaving her very hurt as he said some incredibly hurtful things to her.

He was subsequently attacked by a thug who stole his cab – setting off a chain of events which saw him falling off the wagon in worrying fashion.

With his alcoholism having reared its head again, could this ultimately prove to be fatal for the popular character?

Is Peter leaving Coronation Street and does he die?

As it stands there is no suggestion that Peter is set to leave the cobbles for now, or that his alcoholism could have tragic consequences – so we’ll just have to keep watching to see what happens next.

However he has definitely fallen back on to the booze, as we saw on Monday night when following the assault, a passer-by named Barry found him and offered to call the police – but complicated matters by offering him a drink from his hip flask.

Peter ended up drinking every last drop before returning to Weatherfield to buy some mouthwash, and going home to a horrified Carla, who apologised for the argument and reiterated that she loved him.

He promptly went out into the yard to rinse his mouth out to mask the smell of the alcohol – leaving viewers to wonder whether his drinking is set to spiral out of control once again.

Peter Gascoyne has previously addressed his character’s alcoholism – saying that if he were ever to leave the soap it would have to play a part in his exit.

Speaking to The Sun in 2018 he said that while he had no plans to quit Corrie, he added: ‘If they said to me that they were going to write Peter out or I told them that I was finished for good, he would have to drink himself to death.

‘I don’t think it would be a very nice storyline but it would be brilliant. Something tragic would happen and he falls off the wagon again and drinks himself into oblivion. I would like to do that.’

Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm.
