James Corden has given Gavin and Stacey fans the strongest hint yet that the show could make a return by saying he's "just got to let the tank fill up again" for plot ideas.

Gavin and Stacey last aired a new episode for the Christmas special in 2019, 10 years on from its last full series, and fans of the sitcom have been clamouring for another instalment ever since.

But despite James saying that he and co-creator and star Ruth Jones have no firm plans to revisit the show, things now sound a bit more definite.

Speaking to Alison Hammond for This Morning on Thursday, James said: "Really, it's just about finding the time to do it and finding out if we think it's good enough.

"Nobody wants a last episode that doesn't deliver, so we've just got to sort of let the tank fill up again really.

"I hope so much that we get to do one. I think it would be strange to leave it where we left it."

The last episode was left on a cliffhanger as Ruth's character Nessa proposed to James's character Smithy in a huge moment for the comedy, which has followed a will-they-won't-they storyline for the pair throughout its run.

Nessa got down on one knee to pop the question after meeting Smithy's snobby new girlfriend, but viewers were left hanging on to find out what his answer would be as the episode ended.

Alison asked: "Does Smithy say yes?"

James, 42, replied: "I honestly don't know the answer, I've no idea. I'm just as excited to find out the answer as you are, I don't know, I have no idea."

He also recently told Zoe Ball: "As it stands right now, there aren’t any plans to do one, but that’s not to say that there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one… that special ends on such a, it’s so open-ended that I think it would be a shame to leave it there.

"That’s certainly my feeling and I think Ruth feels the same."

Later in the interview, James collapsed in fits of giggles as Alison showed him a series of rude vegetable pictures in a game where he had to guess what they were.

As she held up some photos of particularly odd-shaped carrots and parsnips, James said: "You can't show this on morning television!"

But Alison told him: "It's a vegetable, I can show this, it's just vegetables."
