James Martin joined This Morning presenters Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes to cook up a tasty fish dish. After he showed viewers how to make the dish, he urged those tuning to turn up to restaurant bookings they make. He explained to ITV viewers that restaurant “no-shows” were becoming increasingly common post-lockdown.

Eamonn remarked: “James I’m assuming my friend, since the lockdown restrictions have been lifted you are back in the kitchen commercially in one of your restaurants.”

“I literally am working seven days a week,” James replied.

“I did 104 hours this week hence the hair and the beard’s a bit of a mess so I do apologise.

“I’m literally, as soon as I finish this with you I’m back for service this afternoon and tonight.

“I’m working seven days in the restaurant and it’s going great guns.”

Ruth asked: “And James you’ve had a lot of chefs complaining and saying people aren’t turning up.

“Have you had any of that?”

James, 48, explained: “Fortunately a few times but not to the extent of some of the other people I have heard about as well.

“The worst case scenario is that my friend had 96 people booked for lunch and only four turned up. So 90 odd people didn’t even turn up.

“You can imagine running a business like that. It’s very difficult in the hardest times.

“It’s really hard even getting food in let alone staff and everything so it’s an ongoing problem that needs to be addressed.”

Ruth suggested restaurants insist a deposit is made when bookings are placed.

But James admitted that could deter people from making bookings going forward.

He continued: “It’s one of those things, it’s whether people will accept that, it’s a chicken and egg thing.

“It’s difficult to know what to do, there’s no answer for it but hope people have a little bit of common sense and a little bit of courtesy.”

Meanwhile, as he whipped up the haddock dish, James shocked viewers when he enjoyed a glass of wine at 10.30am.

The recipe called for some alcohol and James wasn’t afraid to take a sip of the wine as he presented the dish.
