Jared Leto Would ‘Definitely’ Play the Joker Again
While there are no announced plans for Jared Leto to return as the Joker, the actor has said that he would definitely be willing to suit up once again as the Clown Prince of Crime.
Speaking to Variety, Leto said that he would “definitely play the Joker again” and that “it all depends on the script and the circumstances as it always does.”
Even though all of Leto’s appearances as the Joker were reportedly shelved earlier this year, there are still rumors that he may show up in Harley Quinn’s standalone film – Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) – and maybe even Suicide Squad 2.
When asked if he would appear in Birds of Prey, Leto responded “I don’t think so. You’d have to ask them…Well, we’ll see.”
As for Suicide Squad 2, James Gunn will be directing it and is positioning it as a “total reboot.” While at first Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie were said not to return, it appears now that the character/actress will. These changes may also pave a way for Leto to return, but there is nothing as of this writing to indicate if that will happen or not.
Leto was also asked if he had watched the trailer for Joker by director Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix. While Leto said he didn’t, he is happy to see the success of the superhero film.
“I mean, five or 10 years ago, I don’t know if we thought there would be people this excited about going to the movies this weekend.” Leto said.
While we may not know if he will ever return as the Joker, we do know he will be starring as Marvel’s Morbius in a film of the same name. Playing Morbius, who is a Spider-Man villain, is “almost like a childhood dream come true for the Oscar winner.”
“When I was a kid, I remember being at my grandmother’s house in Louisiana and the original OG would come on and just being pretty transfixed as some many of us were when we saw that,” Leto said. “And then the Anne Rice era was big for my brother and I. We passed those books around to each other.”
Leto also discussed his favorite Hollywood portrayals of vampires and praised “Gary Oldman in Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stroker’s Dracula, The Hunger, and the 2009 Korean film “Thirst.””
When asked about the Twilight franchise, Leto said he “was just too damn old, too old, too jaded, too over prepubescent ideas of romance.”
