Joy Reid To Host Weeknight MSNBC Show Starting On July 20

Joy Reid will start her new weeknight MSNBC show on July 20, filling the 7 PM ET slot that has been vacated since the departure of Chris Matthews.

The ReidOut will be based in Washington. MSNBC said that the new show will draw on Reid’s experience in politics and covering the intersection of race, justice and culture.

Reid’s weekend show, AMJoy, which she has hosted since 2016, will feature a rotating series of hosts until a permanent replacement is named.

Tina Urbanski, who had been executive producer of Hardball, will be executive producer of the new show.

On Wednesday, sister network CNBC announced that former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith would be filling the 7 PM ET slot with a nightly newscast, starting in the fall. He is expected to appear on the network on Thursday morning to provide further details.

In addition to her weekend show, Reid has filled in for other MSNBC primetime hosts, including Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell.

Reid previously hosted the daytime MSNBC show The Reid Report and has been a political columnist, blogger and commentator, as well as managing editor of the news site Last month, she hosted the special, The Road to Reform: A Special Report with Joy Reid, which aired in the 7 PM time slot.

Reid started her career in Florida, and also worked has been a talk radio host and recently authored The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling Of The American Story. She worked as a press aide in Florida for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, and also worked for the progressive political action group America Coming Together.

In a statement, Reid said, . “I’ll always be proud of the work we did on AM Joy by pushing the envelope and tackling pragmatic conversations. I’m eager to carry that same energy into the 7 p.m. hour where we can continue to build on bringing in diverse, smart, and accomplished voices to the table on topics that are important to our viewers.”

MSNBC president Phil Griffin said that Reid is “thoughtful and brings so much depth to her reporting. She’s made for this moment.”
