The morning TV presenter has been extremely open about the hardship she has been going through since her husband Derek fell ill with coronavirus in March of last year. Now coming back to Good Morning Britain, Kate opened up about how she hasn’t been able to see him at all in the new year and how it’s taking a toll on both of them.
Kate was asked about Derek’s conditions this morning by co-presenter Ben Shephard: “Well, I haven’t been able to see him, Ben,” she said.
“I haven’t been able to see him since Christmas, which of course means he is back into a situation of looking at strangers in masks.
“That is a situation for everybody who has got someone they love in a hospital at the moment, it’s not unique to him.”
She then went on to say that “it’s tough” and that: “It’s also the same for people in care homes.”
“And when you are someone like him who is dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can’t help but fear that it’s not helpful,” commented Kate.
She also added that she feels like it would be really helpful for her husband in his recovery to be around faces he knows.
“That is very tough and there is no end in sight,” she continued.
Kate also added that “We have got Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, on the show later. I haven’t spoken to him since Derek got sick and there are lots of things to ask.”
However, the presenter said she doesn’t blame anyone for this situation: “There is no-one to blame, there is no-one to be angry with. It’s the situation we are all in.”
Dr Hillary also chimed in to say: “It’s really tough.
“Normally with someone in that condition you would want to be by their side and encourage them to come out of that semi-conscious state and you can’t do that at the moment and that must be heartbreaking,” he said.
