Kate Garraway confesses it’s been a ‘tough week’ as Derek ‘fights’ for his life
Kate Garraway revealed she has endured a "tough week" as her husband remains in hospital, after the coronavirus wreaked havoc on his internal organs.
Giving an update on Derek Draper's condition on today's (October 9) Good Morning Britain, the 53-year-old admitted he was still "fighting" against the odds.
Derek, also 53, was admitted to hospital with Covid-19 in March, and though the virus is no longer in his system, he remains in a state of "minimum consciousness" after waking up from an induced coma.
The conversation turned to Derek's health battle during an interview with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, when he sent his well wishes to Kate's husband.
Thanking the former PM for his kind words, Kate said: "It's been a tough week for Derek, but he is fighting."
Lorraine Kelly then shared a few words of support, as she appeared from her wing of the ITV studios.
She said: "I'm sorry it's been a rough week, we love having you on the telly."
Ben Shephard bright some light comedy to the situation, as he jested: "Do we, do we?"
With a smile brought to her face, Kate replied: "Ben is not so sure Lorraine, perhaps it's because you're far away from me in different studios."
The virus left Derek with blood clots in his lungs and made him diabetic, as Kate explained Covid had "attacked everything" in her beloved husband’s system.
Thankfully, Kate has been able to visit Derek in hospital, and is hopeful the sound of her voice could help him to fully wake up.
Kate has vowed to stay strong throughout his health battle for their children, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.
The nurses in the hospital even turn on GMB when Kate appears on the show, so her husband can listen to her speak from the screen.
Reaching out to her husband and the NHS workers from the ITV news desk back in August, Kate said: "So good morning to you, thank you for everything you're doing and good morning to Derek as well.
"We don't know how much he can see or hear but we know the programme is on."
Kate's co-star Adil Ray, 46, added: "Morning mate."
