Kate Garraway stopped from seeing husband Derek after ‘tough’ visit with their children

GMB: Kate Garraway discusses ‘tough’ Christmas with Derek

Kate, 53, returned to screens for Thursday’s edition of Good Morning Britain and hosted the show alongside colleague Ben Shephard, 45. As well as discussing the day’s headlines, the mother-of-two gave an update on Derek, 53, who remains in hospital after battling and finally testing negative for coronavirus last year. With her husband still in a comatose state as his body recovers from the impact of COVID-19, the journalist told ITV viewers she would not be able to visit him for the foreseeable future after a rather “tough” Christmas with the family.

The mother-of-two explained the festive season was “tough” for her and her loved ones without her husband at home, as well as acknowledging it was “tough” for people across the UK.

However, she said for the first time since March, the couple’s children Darcey and Billy were able to see their father over Christmas.

“It was a lovely moment we did have,” the presenter stated, before adding it was “very emotional” to have the family in one room again.

“I am grateful to have had that opportunity,” the broadcaster shared, but then said because of the new lockdown measures in place, the hospital her husband is being treated will not allow visitors.

This means for the first time in months, the husband and wife have been separated once again.
