Lee Ryan didn’t fancy Strictly for fear his private life would be ‘exposed’

Lee Ryan has admitted that he was initially apprehensive about appearing on Strictly because he was nervous about the media exposure.

The 35-year-old former Blue singer, who recently starred in EastEnders, previously appeared on Celebrity Big Brother back in 2014. During this time he courted a lot of controversy for his relationships in the house.

Speaking about why he had decided to take part in Strictly this year, he revealed that he was reluctant at first to be a part of it.

“I was quite apprehensive to do it at first, I’ll be really honest, and I think not because of the actual show, but because of the media attention around the show,” he said.

“And the whole machine that it is, you get intrusive questions, they want to get into your personal life.”

Lee, who is dad to children Bluebell and Rayn, insisted that he loved his life as it was.

“I don’t go to a lot of celebrity events, I’d rather be with my kids, I’m either at work or with my kids,” Lee said. “So I don’t really lead a celebrity style lifestyle, and I think that this is quite exposing.”

However he added: “So I think that was quite a thing for me when I first decided to do it, I thought it would be good confidence wise, learn something new, and something you can walk away from and think ‘I really got something from that’ and that’s what I think the great appeal of the show is.”

Asked whether he was worried about people speculating over his relationship status, he joked: “Probably too close so I’d fall over!”

While taking part in the 13th series of CBB, Lee became romantically involved with two housemates – Casey Bachelor and Jasmine Waltz .

Afterwards, Lee and Jasmine continued their romance outside the house but their relationship came to an explosive end after she accused him of cheating on her with a man.

Lee also said that the dance routines in Blue had “absolutely not” prepared him for the show.

“Like yeah, I learned loads,” he said sarcastically. “If they go to me ‘lean, wink, airgrab’ I’ll get ten points! I wake up going like that. It’s like a brain reaction in the morning.”

His kids are very excited about Strictly: “My little girl’s over the moon that Joe Sugg is in it. Couldn’t give a s*** about me!”

He also admitted that he wasn’t surprised at the backlash surrounding the line-up: “I think that you have to expect some kind of negative opposition to this whole machine, and what it is, and the show.

"It’s the biggest show in the world. People are gonna go out there and say I hate it but they’re still going to watch it."

Strictly Come Dancing pairing show airs on Saturday at 7.35pm on BBC1 before the series starts a few weeks later.
