Line of Duty season 5 spoilers: Is Steve Arnott H?

Line of Duty season five, episode six airs tonight (Sunday, May 5) at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The past three seasons of the show have revolved around the identity of H which will hopefully be revealed in the season five finale tonight. DC Steve Arnott (played by Martin Compston) from AC-12 has been working tirelessly to find out who H is but could he actually be H himself?

Is Steve Arnott H?

If H is a senior police officer from AC-12, Steve Arnott could well be H.

Jed Mercurio is known for shocking viewers and twisting the plot in all sorts of directions, so viewers should not completely rule Steve Arnott out of the picture.

However, it would be highly unlikely that Steve could be H, seen as he was the one working closely with undercover officer John Corbett (Stephen Graham) before he was brutally killed by the OCG.

Arnott and DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) have been hunting for H since season three and now it looks like Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) has become the main suspect.

At Betfair, Steve Arnott has been given odds of 12/1 to be H.

At Coral, Steve Arnott is even considered to be less likely to be H with odds of 20/1.

Betfair’s odds for the identity of H are:

  • Ted Hastings 2/1
  • Roz Huntley 5/1
  • Kate Fleming 11/2
  • Derek Hilton 6/1
  • Gill Biggeloe 8/1
  • Steve Arnott 12/1
  • Nigel Morton 14/1
  • Tatleen Sohota 16/1
  • Roisin Hastings 25/1

At Ladbrokes, Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) has odds of 2/1 to be H, followed by Kate Fleming at 3/1 and Ted Hastings at 4/1.

Actor Compston recently shared some photos on his Twitter and Instagram of himself with former Line of Duty star, Matthew “Dot” Cottan, played by Craig Parkinson.

Cottan, also known as The Caddy, was the bent copper that was killed off in season three.

In his final moments, Cottan told Kate the first initial of the senior police officer who was in charge of the OCG which was “H”.

Compston captioned the photo: “Looking forward to ep 6”, suggesting that Dot is back from the dead.

The picture sent fans into meltdown with many suspecting that Dot is still H and that Steve is working to protect him.

Or Dot is still alive and living under protection, with Steve using Dot’s intelligence to continue the activities of the OCG.

One fan wrote in response: “Please Steve don’t be bent !!! X”

Other added: “This is a bluff. No way you’d be allowed to reveal a spoiler like this.”

Another fan tweeted: “My nerves are wrecked lol… ep6 Mother of God etc… Adrian’s sayings are class, fella!”

Former prison governor and Emeritus Professor of Criminology at Birmingham City University, David Wilson, commented: “Mercurio knows how to write a narrative arc to throw the audience off the scent. He does this by making it appear as if we know more than we actually do.

“However, that caveat notwithstanding, it would appear to me to lead back to Ted Hastings. If Hastings is not ‘H’, which is perfectly feasible, he has broken so many rules by this stage of the investigation that he could never be allowed to be in charge again!”
