'Lovecraft Country' Season 2: Release Date, Plot Details, and Everything Else We Know
Lovecraft Country has been a truly pleasant surprise. Debuting in August of 2020, the series from HBO quickly became a fan-favorite for its intricate storytelling, moving performances, and spooky twist on Black history. But unfortunately, it could be a while before viewers get new episodes.
At the time of this writing, HBO has not announced a second season for the show. However, if it does get the green light, there are already ideas in mind for what might happen. Ahead, learn more about Lovecraft Country and everything we know about its future plans.
WARNING: This post contains spoilers for the first season of Lovecraft Country, including the finale that aired on Oct. 18.
What is ‘Lovecraft Country?’
Based on an eponymous 2016 novel, Lovecraft Country is a horror drama series created by Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele. It is set in the 1950s and centers on Atticus “Tic” Freeman (Jonathan Majors), a Black war veteran who discovers his true ancestry during a search for his missing father (Michael K. Williams).
Tic is accompanied by his childhood friend Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). Along the way, the group encounters many monsters and creatures, both human and non-human. This includes Tic’s distant cousin Christina Braithwhite (Abbey Lee), who needs his blood to perform an immortality ritual.
How did ‘Lovecraft Country’ Season 1 end?
The first season ended in the exact way that Ji-Ah (Jamie Chung) predicted: in Tic’s death.
He and his peers had hoped they would be able to hijack Christina’s spell, but their plans went awry once Christina caught on.
Once she got ahold of Tic, she started the immortality ritual. Tic was left bleeding out as Christina started to drink his blood and consume his power. Before she could finish the spell, Ji-Ah intervened, using her tentacles to stop Christina. But she was still too late, as Tic does not survive the incident. The episode ends with his body being carried back across the bridge.
What we know about ‘Lovecraft Country’ Season 2
Although HBO has not confirmed a second season, Green told Rolling Stone in an interview published on Oct. 18: “We’re in talks with HBO. I just finished the finishing touches of Season One three weeks ago. But I’m excited about exploring Season Two and what we have in mind. Nothing’s official.”
Going on in an interview with Deadline, she added: “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of.”
One season two theory floating around the Internet is that Tic might return, but maybe not. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Majors said that Tic is gone and that he’s “very at peace” with his story. But at the same time, he didn’t shut the door on returning to his role, if that’s something writers decide to do.
