Natalie Imbruglia says Neighbours axing is ‘devastating’ as she backs fan petition
Former Neighbours star Natalie Imbruglia has spoken of her devastation that the popular Aussie soap is being axed in the UK.
Speaking on the Heart Breakfast show with JK and Kelly Brook, Natalie, 47, reflected on her time playing Beth Brennan in Ramsay Street, as she backed a fan petition to save the soap from being cancelled.
Natalie, who portrayed Beth from 1992 to 1994, told the show’s hosts she was gutted about the news, saying: “Oh I think it's really sad!”
The Aussie star, who was crowned the winner of The Masked Singer on Saturday 12 February after impressing the star detectives and fans, continued: “I think at this point we just thought it was gonna go on forever so, I, you know, people are petitioning. Here’s hoping they pull it off.”
Natalie then added: “I mean, who wants life without ‘Neighbours’? Let's face it.”
The Torn singer and actress also said that Beth’s son Ned is still a major part of the soap, and that she wants to know what will happen to him next.
She explained: “There's a character on the show who's my son! I mean, I think it’d be devastating. What's going to happen to my son?”
However, Natalie isn’t the only former Neighbours star to have her say on Channel 5’s controversial axing.
Jason Donovan, who starred as Scott Robinson from 1986 to 1989, wrote on his Twitter account: “@neighbours changed the Australian television landscape. It launched many careers over decades including mine. Engaged and entertained audiences for generations.
The 53 year old star added: “Hoping that it will find a new home with another U.K. broadcaster and continue to provide opportunity and entertainment.”
This comes after Channel 5 confirmed the reports that the show would no longer be shown on their channel.
A spokesperson told The Mirror: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.”
“It's been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.”

They continued: “We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.”
“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”
