Oti Mabuse addresses Couple’s Choice backlash from Strictly fans ahead of final with Bill

Strictly: Oti Mabuse and Bill discuss Couple's Choice dance

Oti Mabuse, 30, and comedian Bill, 55, are currently on course to win the Strictly Come Dancing final this weekend, possibly giving the professional dancer her second consecutive win. Before then, the pair will have to perform three times on the BBC dance show this Saturday as they aim to impress the judges and viewers at home only more time. One of their routines will be a Couple’s Choice, which has caused huge contention amongst fans of the programme as they’ve claimed it is an “easy route” to get high scores from the panel.

Amongst the dances unveiled for the final, it was announced Oti and Bill would be performing their Street/Commercial routine, which saw them score 27 points out of a possible 30.

Not impressed with the decision to include such a dance, one viewer wrote: “Oh come on, Strictly – Couple’s Choice is a cop out and if we *must* have it, it should be a theme week with all couples doing it in the same week.”

Appearing on Friday’s edition of sister show It Takes Two, the professional dancer spoke about how she approaches the Couple’s Choice.

Although she didn’t explicitly reference the backlash, the reigning champion explained she likes to hand control to the contestant when it comes to choosing the type of dance.

“Every single year, I always leave Couple’s Choice up to the celebrity because I want this to be their favourite dance.”

“This is the last dance they are going to do on Strictly forever,” the professional dancer continued to explain.

“For Bill, he hasn’t stopped singing the song [Sugarhill Gang] and when we did it in rehearsals, it literally works.

“It just goes to show when he dances it, it’s not going to be from a technical point of view, it’s just because he loves it.

The finalist added: “I love it, it’s just a fantastic song,” before host Rylan Clark Neal, 31, told him viewers can see the enjoyment he gets from it.

Although some fans were pleased with the Couple’s Choice dance, others were excited to see the pair in the final.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: “Never voted for a winner of a show but you better believe I’m voting several times over for Bill Bailey tomorrow #strictly.”

Another avid Bill supporter added: “Best of luck for tomorrow night Bill – I’m definitely #TeamBill for #Strictly!”

Whilst a third commented of the final: “If Bill Bailey doesn’t win #Strictly I might have to give up reality TV!”

Their Street/Commercial routine won’t be the only performance the pair are giving this weekend as they have to complete two others, as well.

Completing their final schedule is the judges choice, with the panel opting to see the couple’s Quickstep from week two.

Bill and Oti will also take on a Showdance, as every remaining contestant is doing with their partner as their swan song.

It seems fans are already rallying behind the comedian and his professional partner as they are leading the charge to win.

According to Coral bookmakers, the pair stand in first place as their chances of victory are currently 8/11.

Not far behind them is singing sensation HRVY, 21, and his partner Janette Manrara, 26, who could scoop the top prize at 7/4.

Spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “It’s time for the Strictly Come Dancing final and we make Bill Bailey the one to beat and the odds on favourite.

“If Bill falls short, then HRVY looks the one to swoop in and lift the Glitterball Trophy.”

Strictly Come Dancing concludes Saturday at 6pm on BBC One.
