Outlander will return for season six but it will be a while until it begins on Starz. Filming began on the new episodes in February 2021, so viewers are expected to wait until early 2022 to see what happens. So much has happened in the time-travelling drama already though to keep fans hooked.

Why did Tobias Menzies leave Outlander?

Frank Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) was the first husband of Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and dad to Brianna (Sophie Skelton).

When Claire was still living her life as a nurse in the 1940s, she was with Frank and the season showed their turbulent relationship.

At one time, they thought their marriage could work as Brianna was born but this just highlighted the troubles they were having.

Their story ended in tragedy with Frank’s shocking death during season three.

Frank and Claire had a blazing row, ending with him storming out of the house.

In a devastating moment, Frank was involved in a car crash shortly after and was killed.

Actor Menzies remained in the drama as he also played Captain Jack Randall but he later died in the same series at the

Battle of Culloden at the hands of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Menzies has made brief returns to the series during flashback moments but hasn’t made a comeback full-time.

The Crown star has never given a reason as to why he left the show but it could just be because it was written this way.

Outlander is based on the book series created by author Diana Gabaldon, with the TV series following a lot of the same plots.

Much like the series, Frank and Claire had a row in the book, with him saying he was leaving for Cambridge and was going to take Brianna with him.

He left the house, driving off when the car slipped on ice and Frank died in the accident.

Speaking about his time on Outlander to The Hollywood Reporter, Menzies said: “I worked hard on both of these characters [Frank and Jack].

“It was a challenge to make them different, but in a subtle way so it wasn’t too obvious. I hope that it worked but one can never really know.

“My biggest takeaway, I think, is the friends I’ve made. All of them will stay in my life for a long time, so that’s wonderful.”

Despite his character not being brought back in the book series, Menzies has said he would be open to returning.

Talking to Town and Country Magazine, Menzies said: “There’s no plans for it.

“I guess in a show that involves time travel, you can never say never.”

Even if it was just in a flashback scene, could Frank return in Outlander season six?

Outlander is available to watch on Starz and Starzplay via Amazon Prime.
