Riverdale returned for season five earlier this year, taking the story seven years forward into the future, with the Core Four now young adults. They have all gone and had different experiences during this time and have been reunited to save Riverdale from Hiram Lodge (played by Mark Consuelos). Despite the complexities of all of their lives, they have still found the time to get reacquainted with one another.

Riverdale’s Core Four need to be single in season 5 – here’s why

Not too long before the gang came back to Riverdale, all four of them were making romantic connections.

Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) started sleeping together but when that ended, he began seeing Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) again.

However, Veronica is still married to Chad Gekko (Chris Mason) and so there are still feelings there as well.

Meanwhile, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) clearly has chemistry with Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook) and the pair kissed for the first time in the series five midseason finale.

While it has been interesting to see how the dynamics of the group have changed in comparison to seven years ago, some fans believe they all just need to be single for the time being.

Taking to Reddit, one fan started off the conversation by saying: “As much as I ship Varchie, [Veronica and Archie] my opinion after this episode honestly is that all the Core 4 need to be single for a while to get their sh*t together.”

Several Reddit users then jumped in on the conversation to agree with this.

One fan said: “And they have to actually talk to each other and not just kiss, i mean it not that hard right?

“I don’t understand why the writers do this to us.”

While a second added: YES! I think Veronica should finalize her divorce first.”

A third even went on to explain how they were tired of seeing relationships form just so they can see them fall apart.

They commented: “Nowadays with shows like Riverdale, I’m not really that interested in the relationships because the writers always find a way to ruin the relationships just for the sake of drama.

“I think it’s very possible to write a relationship for TV without it involving cheating or breaking up for the dumbest reason.

“Healthy relationships can work but I have yet to see a true relationship on tv that didn’t have some toxicity.

“Plus I feel having them single would help with their character development if written and executed right.”

Now is probably not the best time for any of the Core Four to be getting involved in a relationship.

First off, Veronica is still married to Chad and he is now threatening to take her to court as he took out some dodgy loans, claiming they were for her businesses.

Archie is dealing with his former sergeant who appears to have been leading dangerous missions which resulted in the red head’s fellow soldiers getting killed.

The sergeant threatened to make him the scapegoat if Archie didn’t come around to his way of thinking.

Betty’s sister Polly Cooper (Tiera Skovbye) is still missing and could potentially be dead.

She was still seeing FBI agent Glen (Greyston Holt) though who wanted to get closer to her as he had been writing a dissertation on her family and the serial killer gene.

Jughead has been having trouble writing his book, investigating aliens and believes he is blocking out memories from past trauma he hasn’t yet dealt with.

While the rest of the gang have gone into relationships despite everything that is happening, Jughead has been the only one to tell his potential future girlfriend Tabitha that he wasn’t in the right headspace.

This of course is likely to change at some point in the future, given how close the two have become in the past few episodes.

Riverdale is available to watch on The CW and Netflix.
