Scandal and Arrested Development star Portia de Rossi retires from acting

Arrested Development star Portia de Rossi has confirmed that she’s retiring from acting, and the upcoming fifth season of the sitcom will mark her final acting role.

Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Portia revealed that she asked to be written out of Scandal when she made the decision to stop acting, explaining that she wanted to embrace new challenges in life.

“I was approaching 45, but I just kind of was wondering is there something I could tackle now that I’ve never done before that would be really challenging and different?” she said.

“I kind of knew what acting would look like for me for the next 10, 20 years, so I decided to quit and start a business.”

But while Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes was happy to honour Portia’s decision, it sounds like Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz wasn’t quite ready to let go of his Lindsay Bluth Fünke actress just yet, and managed to convince Portia to return for a couple more episodes.

“I made this decision about 18 months ago,” she continued. “Shonda Rhimes wrote me off Scandal. I called Mitch Hurwitz… and I said if there is a season 5, I wont be doing it because I quit acting and he seemed really understanding and he totally got it.

“We had a great conversation… and then he wrote me into five episodes. Don’t know how it happened, but yes I am on season 5.”

The first half of the fifth season of Arrested Development will drop at the end of this month, while the second half is expected to premiere later this year so we’ll still get to see a bit more of Portia in action before she’s off screens for good.

Arrested Development season five premieres on Netflix on May 29, while The Ellen Show airs on CBS in America and ITV2 in the UK.
