Shetland fans were gutted when Douglas Henshall confirmed series seven would be his last as Jimmy Perez. In the latest BBC season, the detective and his sidekick Alison “Tosh” McIntosh (played by Alison O’Donnell) have been busy trying to solve a string of mysterious murders on the island. After an explosion which nearly killed Tosh, the duo are hellbent on trying to find out the culprits before another incident happens.

Tosh may have had a near-death experience, but a lot of viewers seem to think Jimmy will be next.

Towards the end of the episode, Jimmy was after fisherman Ally Flett (Anthony Strachan), who he believed had a bomb on his boat.

“Where are the explosives?” the detective fumed when Ally came back to the dock.

“Don’t you f*****g lie to me, is there a bomb?”

“There are not explosives on this boat, Perez,” he insisted. “Feel free to look.”

Before the episode came to a close, viewers saw a hooded figure wearing red gloves, who appeared to be assembling a bomb.

However, this led fans to believe that Jimmy could end up meeting a sinister end.

Taking to social media to share their thoughts and theories about how the detective with leave, David Cumming wrote: “I have an awful feeling that Jimmy might not make it to the end of the last episode.”

User @TweetHeike_HHL theorised: “Interesting how the undertone of the entire series has been Jimmy having had enough of police work and how he can’t go on anymore the way he has been since the cost to him is too high.

“Fear not I’m sure you get blown up next week Jimmy. #Shetland PS: could the killer be a woman?”

“The killer is Lloyd’s wife! But now I’m getting concerned as to how Jimmy leaves,” Rose added.

Heather went on to tweet: “Convinced that Alison is hiding the truth. Who is the bomb maker in the hoodie? Any connection? #Shetland can’t wait for the final episode…..but I don’t want it to end especially as it’s Jimmy Perez’s exit.”

While Debbie Blackman said: “Let’s just keep Jimmy away from anything explosive at the moment please #Shetland.”

“Is it going to be an explosive final episode?? Is Jimmy goin oot with a bang???” Gareth Jones predicted.

It is unclear how Jimmy will leave Shetland, but on Wednesday the series will come to an end, and fans will finally find out.

Will the detective end up dying? Or will show bosses leae it so he can make a return?

Addressing the reason behind his decision to leave the BBC show, the Jimmy Perez star admitted: “I felt that his story was coming to a natural end – it was time to find a resolution to Perez’s private life.

“I never wanted to ruin the things that were unique to him and our series, so it felt like the right time to wrap up his story in a way that would be satisfactory to everybody.

“I am aware we’re not changing the world in any way, shape or form, but as far as crime shows go, Shetland does really well in that genre.

“We tell stories that are very good, the characters are great and I wanted to go out on a high.”

Shetland airs on Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
