Soap extras to be honoured with their own award for the first time ever
Soap extras are to be honoured with their own award for the first time ever.
On Wednesday (May 30), it was announced that actors working as extras on British shows will get their own awards nominations in the form of the TV Soap Extra of the Year Award 2018.
Sponsored by PlayOJO casino, the category will see much loved extras – including the oldest-serving couple in Coronation Street, Winston from EastEnders, Dirk ‘Knicker stitcher’ from Coronation Street, the longest serving Hollyoaks extra Gemma Jones, and a ubiquitous soap police officer – battle it out for the award, which will be presented ahead of this weekend’s National Soap Awards.

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton will present the winner with the award on Friday (June 1).
The winner will then receive a trophy and tickets to the National Soap Awards.
“I see every day the level of enthusiasm and hard work supporting artists bring to the set, so I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to acknowledge them for the great work they do,” said Antony.
“I’m looking forward to seeing who the country votes for!”
“Time and time again, we see glitzy awards ceremonies and recognition for the famous faces in our much-loved soaps, but unfairly in our view, the supporting artists that work tirelessly to enhance the finished product are often overlooked when it comes to getting a gong, so we want to reward their craft by giving one of them our TV Soap Extra of the Year Award,” added a PLAYOJO spokesperson.
“With the British Soap Awards on the horizon, we want to take matters into our own hands, with the help of the public, to ensure we bring some fairness back into the awards industry in the hope that it will give these talented people the recognition they deserve.”
The TV Soap Extra of the Year AWARD 2018 vote has been put to the public through the PlayOJO Facebook page, with the additional option of emailing your vote to [email protected]
