Soap fans rage as both Corrie and Emmerdale are cancelled for World Cup

It may be Wednesday, but ITV will be devoid of any soap drama tonight.

Of course, this has mightily upset Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans, who won’t be able to get their one and a half hour fix.

Viewers flocked to Twitter to express their dismay.

One tweeted: "Roll on mid July … I don’t mind a bit of football but taking ALL the soaps off is very naughty! #StopTakingTheSoapsAway #EnoughAlready."

While another commented: "Why cant they just move the football to ITV2, then it doesn’t interfere with our soaps and those who want to watch the matches can do."

A third remarked: "I hate it when football disrupts the usual viewings. A load of crap programs on all day. Soaps on at ridiculous times. Missing the few good shows on that were considerate enough to stay on normal schedule. #rant."

Instead of Emmerdale airing at 7pm and Coronation Street airing at 7.30pm and 8.30pm, ITV will be airing the Iran vs Spain World Cup game from 6.30pm (kick off at 7pm) for almost three hours.

While the soaps will be not airing tonight, there were extra helpings of Corrie and Emmerdale last week.

Last night, there was also an hour-long episode of both Emmerdale and Corrie.

Both soaps will return tomorrow, each for an hour, at 7pm and 8pm respectively. Meanwhile EastEnders will air at 9.10pm.

They will air again at the same time on Friday.
