Soul cast: Who plays the subway performer in Soul? Is it their singing voice?

Soul: Jamie Foxx stars in trailer for Disney Pixar film

Soul stars Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey as souls trying to discover what it is to be human, though they may not realise it. Number 22, voiced by Tina, is trying to find her spark while Joe, voiced by Jamie, believes he has already found it and has left it behind. One scene includes a beautiful song sung by a street performer – but who plays the singer?

Who plays the subway performer in Soul?

WARNING: Mild spoilers for Soul ahead

The street performer, who has a guitar on the subway and is serenading passengers, is played by Cody Chesnutt.

The busker sings about love and has 22 (voiced by Tina Fey) entranced as he sings from his heart, so much so she wants to give him some money.

She has nothing on her, and so puts half a bagel in his guitar box before boarding the subway with Joe (Jamie Foxx.)

The song Cody sings, Parting Ways, is an original composition of his, which features on the Soul official soundtrack along with some classic jazz tunes.

Cody has been in the music business for some time, with his music mainly focusing on funk and soul styles, blending elements of rock as well.

He started out writing and producing songs for other artists when he moved to Los Angeles from Atlanta, Georgia, where he is from.

He formed a band called The Crosswalk, which was signed, but was later released at which point the group parted ways.

His first album was a double LP, The Headphone Masterpiece, which Cody made on a four-track cassette recorder in his bedroom, and was released in 2002.

One song from this, The Seed, caught the attention of The Roots, a hip hop band featuring QuestLove, a famous drummer.

The band now works as Jimmy Fallon’s in-house band on The Tonight Show, and QuestLove has a voice role in Soul as drummer Curly.

The group reworked The Seed, creating The Seed 2.0 in March 2003, which had some mainstream success and brought attention to Cody’s work.

Cody was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize in 2003, but missed out on this to Damien Rice.

He performed on Later… with Jools Holland in 2012, performing some tracks from his third album Landing on a Hundred.

Cody also performed on Dave Chapelle’s Block Party, a music documentary, which also featured major artists like Kanye West, Mos Def and Common.

He has continued making music, releasing three full albums and one EP since his first, while also contributing to other artists.

Soul is his first role in a movie, and perhaps came about as part of his relationship with QuestLove, though the pair are not featured in the same scene.

Certainly, the Pixar movie has brought mainstream attention to Cody’s music and may mean a further renaissance for him as fans become more interested in who he is.
