Spoilers: Hollyoaks star reveals huge twists as Cleo returns
The day that fans of Hollyoaks have been craving is almost here, as Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin) returns to the eponymous village next week, and it’s safe to say that she makes quite the impression upon doing so!
The mainstay made her last appearance in the Channel 4 soap last November, as she made a decision to leave after discovering boyfriend Mitchell Deveraux (Imran Adams) had been cheating on her with Scott Drinkwell (Ross Adams).
A lot can happen in a year’s time, and that’s certainly the case for Cleo, who returns with a new lease on life.
‘She’s been doing some soul searching,’ actress Nadine Mulkerrin told Metro.co.uk, ‘And some self-care. She’s been in a really good place and having the time of her life.’
Cleo makes her long-awaited return in episodes which will transmit next week, but it’s only a matter of time before she crosses paths with Mitchell and Scott.
‘Cleo’s first encounter with Scott and Mitchell is quite strange for her,’ Nadine recalls, ‘Obviously they’ve been up to so much and been so busy whilst I’ve been away. They’ve got married!
‘But she comes back in a good head space, and she doesn’t want to have any grudges, and she’s like: “It is what it is”. She wants them to be happy ultimately. It’s all positive, good, vibes even though it is a little bit awkward when they come face-to-face.’
Yes, Cleo has no animosity for those who hurt her, and this is something she relays to Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe), who is pleased for her. Theresa (Jorgie Porter), however, has her doubts about the returnee, and ultimately comes to believe that she’s the mysterious blackmailer!
Theresa relays her suspicions to Goldie (Chelsee Healey), and they ultimately confront Cleo on the matter.
‘She’s shocked,’ reveals Nadine, ‘She doesn’t understand why her family are accusing her in this way. Obviously she denies being the blackmailer, but she’s upset at her family. But it also highlights how much they are being tormented if they are actually willing to suspect it’s Cleo’
Accusations aside, it seems as if Cleo’s return will mark the beginning of a new era for the much-loved character, but could romance perhaps be on the cards for her?
‘She potentially might have a spark with Toby,’ the actress teased, ‘They’ve got a few scenes coming up together, so I’m not sure how that’s going to develop. In typical Hollyoaks style she’s hanging out with her ex’s sibling but yes let’s wait and see!’
Of course, Cleo’s return will no doubt result in fans wanting to know if she could rekindle her romance with former flame Joel Dexter (played by Nadine’s real-life fiancé Rory Douglas-Speed)?
Nadine reckons the much-loved pairing should give things another go, but not necessarily for the reasons than you might think!
‘Cleo and Joel do have a big history together. I think the show should get them back together, purely because it means we are in the same household, so we might be able to act together and cuddle and kiss.
‘It will be a bit more real, so that would be better for me, and obviously I love working with Rory. Even though we literally live in each other’s pockets, we get on with it really well.’
Nadine makes an excellent point!
Hollyoaks continues Monday November 16 at 7pm on E4.
